Ottawa, KS – Fatality & Serious Injury in Truck Crash on I-35 Near Sand Creek Rd
Ottawa, KS (August 15, 2025) – One person was killed and another seriously injured on Thursday morning, August 14, in a crash involving two semi-trucks in Franklin County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP). The collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Interstate 35, just south of Sand Creek Road near Ottawa.
KHP reported that 29-year-old Zachary Williams of Liberty, Tennessee, was driving northbound in the outside lane when, for reasons still under investigation, he drifted into the inside lane, crossed the median, and entered the southbound lanes.
The southbound semi driver attempted to avoid the collision by steering into the grass, but the northbound truck struck the vehicle. Williams’ truck became fully engulfed in flames following the impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second semi driver sustained suspected serious injuries and was transported to The University of Kansas Health System for treatment. Emergency crews worked to secure the scene and investigate the cause of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family of Zachary Williams and with the injured driver during this difficult time. The investigation remains ongoing.
Fatal Semi-Truck Accidents in Franklin County
Crashes involving semi-trucks often result in devastating outcomes due to the sheer size and weight of the vehicles. On busy routes like I-35 in Franklin County, high speeds combined with significant truck traffic create conditions where even a single mistake can lead to catastrophic consequences.
When a semi crosses a median, the potential for severe or fatal injuries increases dramatically. Other drivers have limited time to react, and evasive maneuvers may not always prevent impact. Fires, like the one in this crash, can further complicate rescue efforts and increase the severity of injuries.
For families who lose loved ones in truck accidents, the aftermath can be emotionally and financially overwhelming. In Kansas, surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death claim to recover compensation for funeral costs, loss of income, and emotional suffering. For injured victims, legal claims can address medical expenses, rehabilitation, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
Truck accident cases are complex because they may involve multiple liable parties, including drivers, trucking companies, and equipment manufacturers. Investigations typically review driver records, maintenance logs, black box data, and witness statements to establish fault.
An experienced truck accident attorney can guide victims and families through the legal process, handle insurance negotiations, and work to ensure fair compensation. While no legal action can undo the tragedy, it can help provide financial stability and hold negligent parties accountable.
Safe driving practices, strict adherence to federal trucking regulations, and regular vehicle maintenance are essential steps in reducing the risk of these deadly collisions on Kansas highways.
