Emporia, KS – Pickup Truck Crash with Injuries on I-35 Near KS Tpke

Emporia, KS (September 12, 2025) – A crash on northbound Interstate 35 in southwest Lyon County left two people injured early Thursday morning, September 11.

The incident occurred around 3:23 a.m. on the Kansas Turnpike, about 11 miles southwest of Emporia. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck was travelling north when the driver, Ricardo Gallardo Jr., 25, of San Juan, Texas, fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle veered off the roadway to the right.

Gallardo over-corrected, causing the truck to cross both northbound lanes before striking the median barrier wall multiple times. The vehicle continued to travel, hitting the wall a total of five times before rolling over onto its top.

Both Gallardo and his passenger, Joel Sanchez, 20, of Alamo, Texas, were wearing their seat belts. They were transported to Newman Hospital in Emporia with suspected minor injuries.
