Clarke Co, IA – 2 Airlifted After Car & Semi-Truck Crash on I-35/MM 26

Clarke Co, IA (August 18, 2025) – Two people were seriously injured Saturday afternoon, August 16, in a crash that shut down part of Interstate 35 near Van Wert.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the collision happened just before 2:30 p.m. near mile marker 26. Investigators said a northbound Dodge struck a semi-truck that was attempting to re-enter the travel lanes after stopping on the shoulder due to mechanical problems.

The Dodge, driven by 41-year-old Natasha Lyons, came to rest in the median after the impact. Her 11-year-old passenger was also inside the vehicle. Both were airlifted to Des Moines hospitals with serious injuries.

The semi-truck, operated by 47-year-old Aden Somo, remained on the shoulder following the crash. He was not hurt. Authorities noted that Lyons is suspected of impairment, and an OWI Drug Investigation is underway.

Emergency crews kept portions of I-35 closed for several hours while they assisted victims and cleared the wreckage.

Our thoughts are with the injured child and driver, and we hope for their full recovery. The investigation into this serious crash is ongoing.

Car and Truck Collisions in Iowa

Collisions between passenger cars and semi-trucks are often severe due to the size and weight difference of the vehicles. On major highways like I-35, these crashes can lead to devastating injuries and significant property damage. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, truck-related crashes are a persistent safety concern across the state, especially in rural areas where high speeds are common.

For crash victims, the challenges go far beyond the scene. Injuries often require life-saving measures, extensive hospital stays, and long-term rehabilitation. Families may face emotional distress and financial strain as they deal with medical bills and time away from work. In Iowa, injury victims may be able to seek compensation for hospital expenses, ongoing care, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Cases involving impairment, as suspected in this Clarke County crash, can carry even greater consequences. Victims and their families may pursue claims that hold impaired drivers accountable while also helping to prevent similar tragedies on Iowa highways.

An experienced personal injury attorney can be vital in these situations. Attorneys can review police reports, gather medical evidence, and handle negotiations with insurance companies to make sure victims receive fair support.

The crash near Van Wert is a sobering reminder of the dangers that arise when impairment and high-speed highways intersect. For victims and families, legal and community resources are available to help navigate the path toward recovery and justice.
